Twisted Breadsticks
From: Grandma Bee @ grandmabeesrecipes.com/
Breadsticks don’t have to be plain. With very little effort, your breadsticks can look like these!
You’ll find that making dough and shaping the dough can be a lot of fun! Your breads, breadsticks and rolls will look like you ordered them from a bakery!
makes about 30 breadsticks!
Ingredients:
2 pkgs. yeast
2 cup warm water
4 T. sugar
1 egg, beaten
2 cup milk, scalded and cooled
4 tsp. salt
5 T. shortening
12 cup flour
Instructions:
Dissolve yeast in warm water.
Add sugar, egg, milk, salt, shortening and half of the flour.
Mix well.
Add enough of the remaining flour to make the dough easy to handle.
Knead 10 minutes
(if using bread mixer, add only enough flour to clean the sides of the mixing bowl. Mix on high 6 minutes).
Let rise until double.
Punch down and shape into the twisted breadsticks.
After rolling the dough into a 12-14 inch rope, with your left hand, push the dough away from you while your right hand pulls the dough toward you. This twists the rope of dough.
Then, when you pick it up and put the two ends together, the rope will twist itself!

Place breadsticks onto a silicon baking mat, cover with a clean kitchen towel and allow to rise until double.
Bake at 425° for 12-14 minutes or until golden.
After they come out of the oven and are still hot, I like to brush mine with melted butter, garlic and herbs.
These breadsticks are spectacular!
You can make these ahead of time and freeze.
To make from frozen...Let them come to room temperature first, then just before serving, pop them in a 300° oven for about 5-6 minutes.
