'Temporary' clutter
By: Elizabeth Hogan Hayduk
Sometimes we have 'temporary' clutter. Of course, that's sometimes the most bothersome. For example, I have a station wagon; in the back I keep 4 coolers, a few boxes, & some reusable shopping bags. These items are essential for groc. shopping, esp. the coolers, which are needed for all freezer & fridge items in the heat down here. The boxes hold groc. bags & keep things from tipping over & rolling around. This system works great...until the trunk needs to be emptied out so that the car can be used to haul home things from the home improvement & garden centers stores. A couple of days ago, in between rain showers, I had to pick up fiberglass insulation for our attic. Of course, my car had to be emptied first, which meant all the contents had to be put into our living room. They were neatly stacked; but still it was temp. clutter, & I wanted it out of the house. However, I couldn't put it back in the car until I knew if I had to go haul more rolls home (it turns out that I will need to do so, but not for a few wks, prob.). So, last night the temp clutter was returned to its home in the car.
As I continued to declutter the living room, I had to fig. out a place to put the new library materials that we checked out on Tues (piled on the coffee table & some were still in the library tote bag). The ultimate goal was to have the decluttering done so that I could dust & vacuum. I didn't get it finished, but I did make some important decisions re: places for temp. holding of library materials (the DVDs are on top of our entertainment center; the books are on an end table that's tucked into an unusual corner at the entrance to our hallway between the living room & the den).
The final temp. clutter is the stack of carpet tiles that I have purchased to use in the temp-cold-weather shelters for the 6 cats that we take care of; however, they first need to be sprayed with flea & tick spray (which works for up to 6 mths.) & then stored somewhere until it's time to set up the shelters on our front porch (via draping tarps, adding the carpet tiles, & bedding).
Oops--there was a little more temp. clutter: donations for Goodwill. I've noted about 1/2 of them & put them in the car for drop-off, and still have the rest to write down b/f adding them into the car.
Of course, the fact that it's temporary clutter may cause us to sigh with relief, b/c we know it's not going to be hanging around in the wrong spot--hopefully, not for long. Still, we have to tend it, move it, organize it...
Does anybody else have temporary clutter to deal with? Surely I'm not alone. If you do, do you have a secret to not letting it get too aggravating?
