Apple Fritter Bread

Not only is this an awesome tasting bread but it is fun to make. My kids and I made this together and we had a blast. The dough was easy to work with and came together nicely. The apple mixture smelled incredible and I had to keep the kids from eating it all before it got to the bread. When we poured it on the bread it was ooey gooey and we really didn't know how it would turn out. Then came the fun part. We used a pizza slicer to slice it into little squares. Then somehow managed to smush the squares vertically into the pan. I've made this twice now and we realized that you don't have to be TOO careful about how they go in. Just tip the pan on it's side and place/smush them in there. It turns out just fine.
Ingredients:
Dough:
3 cups flour
1 package yeast
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup water
1 egg, beaten
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup butter
Filling:
5 - 6 small apples, peeled & diced
1 tbsp. lemon juice
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 tbsp. butter
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tbsp. cornstarch
Glaze:
1 Tbsp. butter, softened
1 tsp. vanilla
3/4 cup powdered sugar
3 tsp. half & half or milk
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease a 9 x 5 in. pan.
In a skillet, cook apples, lemon juice, brown sugar, vanilla, butter, cinnamon & cornstarch until mixture is thickened.
Set aside to cool.
Heat the milk in a small saucepan until it bubbles; remove from heat.
Add the butter and stir until melted; set aside.
Put flour, yeast, brown sugar and salt in a bowl, mix well.
Add the water, egg and milk/butter mixture.
Mix until dough forms into a ball; knead for an additional five minutes.
On a well floured surface, roll dough into a rectangle.
Evenly spread apple mixture over dough.
Cut dough into even squares, I got about 20 with my dough.
Using a spatula, place piles of dough into prepared pan.
Tip it on it's side a bit and put the piles upright.
Bake 45-50 minutes; until golden brown.
Immediately remove from pan.
Mix butter, vanilla and powdered sugar into a bowl.
Add half & half; stir until you get a creamy consistency.
Pour on glaze and allow to setup for a few minutes.
Pull some apart and enjoy!
